Hon Justice Joseph Loius Onguto died on Thursday 1st March 2018. The High Court judge collapsed at the Parklands Sports Club gymnasium on that fateful evening before being rushed to MP Shah where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Kenya Judges and Magistrates Association Secretary General Derrick Kuto confirmed the incident. He said that the deceased passed on after a gym session at the club.  A number of leaders have  paid tribute to the Late Justice describing his death as a big blow to the judiciary, noting that Hon Justice Onguto touched so many lives. Among the leaders who paid their tributes included President of the Republic of kenya and JSC President David Maraga.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has mourned Justice Joseph Louis Onguto, describing him as a person who was devoted to dispensing justice without fear or favour. In his condolence message to the family, friends and relatives, President Kenyatta said the late Justice Onguto was a judge committed to entrenching the rule of law in the country. “To him, the future and sustainability of the legal profession and rule of law was key to the administration of justice,” said President Kenyatta. “Certainly, he understood what it meant  to dispense justice without prejudice. He followed and practised what was right as per the evidence adduced before the court,” the President said in his condolence message.

Chief Justice David Maraga also condoled with the family of Justice Joseph Louis Onguto describing him as “a brilliant legal mind.” Maraga, in a statement, praised the judge, for the extensive knowledge he brought to the Judiciary. “On behalf of the Judicial Service Commission, the entire Judiciary and on my own behalf, I send our deepest condolences to his wife Consolata, his children, the Judiciary family, and the Kenyan people who he served with dedication. May God grant the Judge’s family the fortitude to go through this difficult time,” said the CJ.

 Onguto has also been termed one of the most humble, honest and brilliant legal minds to have served in the Judiciary. ‘’We all die the day we are born; life is just but a journey towards the end of the dying, the finality of the living: to be heard and to be seen no more, to be remembered or forgotten only. In the meantime the funeral committee headed by headed by its chairman Eng. Peter Wanday issued the itinerary toward the burial of the late Hon Justice Joseph Onguto whose body lies at Lee Funeral Home Nairobi. Friends and relatives have been meeting at his home in Mountain View and at his rural home in Gem Yala, Siaya county.

On 12th March 2019 at 4.30pm, the Chief Justice David Maraga condoled with the family of the late Hon. Justice Joseph Louis Onguto and his Nairobi Home. Mrs Consolata Adhiambo Onguto received the CJ together with a host of top Judiciary officials among them Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Anne Atieno Amadi. CJ David Maraga promised the family of Justice Onguto that the judiciary were deeply saddened by the death of their colleague who touched so many lives during his life and times at the judiciary. CJ Maraga further promised that the judiciary will assist the family to the best of their capabilities.." As a family, the judiciary will not leave you alone especially on the matters education of the children left behind'', the CJ said. Mrs Consolata Onguto was together with her sister, brother and brother in law among other family members.

A moot court session has been planned for today Tuesday 13th March 2018 at Millimani law courts starting 1.00pm. All the judiciary officially are expected to be there to pay their tributes as prescribed the courts. A memorial service will be held at the Consolata Shrines Westlands on Thursday 22nd March 2018 starting 10am. Guests are requested to be seated by 9.30am.

The cortege will leave Lee Funeral Home Nairobi on Friday 23rd March 2018 for an overnight stay in his rural home in Gem Yala. Burial will take place on Saturday 24th march 2018 in gem Yala, Siaya County County. There was an harambee held on Friday on 10th March 2018 at the Nairobi club. Further more the Funeral Committee headed by family will set up digital Condolence book, pay tribute channel and digital candle lighting platform.
