Former Nyakach MP Dennis Akumu dies in Nairobi.

Former Nyakach MP Dennis Akumu had died aged 82. Akumu a renowned trade union leader locally and internationally passed on this morning shortly after 2am at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi where he was undergoing treatment following a long illness.

Breaking the news officially to the media, the wife of the former MP who is also Women Rep Aspirant for Kisumu County Madam Grace Akumu said that she had lost a confidant a friend..
“It is great regreat to announce the death of my lovely husband who has gone to rest with God. Hon. James Dennis Akumu (Jakogero_ chuth Ber) lost his dear life Thursday 2.25am at Agakhan Hospital Nairobi. He was a two time Nyakach constituency mp in 1969_1973KANU during one party state and between 1992_1997 on Ford Kenya ticket. James Dennis Akumu also served as COTU Secretary general in Kenya and then served in the same capacity in Africa Trade union with its head office in Accra Ghana. May my husband's soul rest in peace amen.” Grace Akumu Said

Hon Dennis Akumu served his first term as a KANU MP, and later vied successfully under the Ford Kenya party ticket.  Akumu served as an MP for two terms, between 1969 to 1973 and later 1992 to 1997.
He served as COTU secretary general from1969 through 1975 and was the founder Secretary General of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity, OATUU based in Accra. Atwoli is the current OATUU President.

Cotu secretary general Francis Atwoli eulogised Akumu terming him as a devoted unionist. Atwoli said funeral and burial arrangements will be announced later by his family and Cotu.
Cotu secretary general Francis Atwoli announced the death of Akumu has caused great sadness in the trade union movement. “Akumu was a polished and trained negotiator whose service as a trade union leader to the Kenyan workers and Africa as whole will forever remain in the annals of our history as a leader who served with zeal and commitment devoid of any compromise nor sway,” Atwoli said.
He was a founder member of the Kenya People’s Union Party which was led by the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
